Firearms Permits
In the State of New Jersey an individual must first apply for a Firearms
Purchaser Identification Card which enables he/she to purchase and transport
rifles or shotguns (long guns). This application initiates a process by which
the State and Federal agencies conduct a back ground check through supplied
fingerprints of the applicant. This process also requires a questionnaire,
application form, references and mental health screening. The State of New
Jersey has firearms purchasing. This process may take as long as two
months to complete. Once the applicant's file receives a positive response
back on all filed requests,a card is issued by the Chief of Police. Should the
applicant then request a permit to purchase a handgun, this is then done
through our Police Department as he/she has been cleared by the issuance of
the Firearms Purchaser Identification Card. It should be noted, a Firearms
Purchasers Identification Card has no expiration date, however a permit to
purchase a handgun expires within 90 days. There is one permit to purchase a
handgun issued for each weapon intended to be purchased. This also serves as a
registration on the weapon. This is logged at both the Municipal and State
level.
